This proof set includes both the 1989 silver dollar and the new aureate (a bronze-electroplated nickel combination) dollar.

The silver dollar marks the 200th anniversary of Sir Alexander Mackenzie's voyage of discovery in the northwest of Canada. The reverse depicts Sir Alexander Mackenzie and his companions in their canoe exploring the Mackenzie River.

The proof circulating dollar bears the popular design of the common loon.
