The silver dollar commemorates the first ship to sail the Great Lakes above Niagara Falls 300 years ago. The reverse depicts the Griffon in full sail.

The nickel dollar bears the popular design of the Indian and Voyageur in a canoe which appeared on the first Canadian silver dollar issued in 1935.
