Sigfusson's Roads
This is the amazing story of a man and his family who had done it all with winter roads: roads that are built of snow and/or ice and are only passable in winter. The rights-of-way are cleared through the bush and swamp and often pass over the frozen surface of lakes. Such roads melt each spring and require reconstruction each fall. Svein Sigfusson was the spark plug that drove a work force of over 400 men deep into the wilderness of northwestern Ontario, northern Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The Sigfusson Transportation Company built a winter road system like no other on earth - stretching 3,560 miles into the dead of winter. Rather than have Sigfusson gain a hard-earned profit by building and operating a winter-road freighting system annually at no cost to society, the governments of the day in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario each were successful in putting the company out of business.
On a personal note, Svein Sigfusson also excelled as a Canadian athlete. He won his first gold medal for the hammer throw in 1938 at the Canadian Championship Games in Saskatoon. Over the next sixteen years, he earned eight Manitoba championships and nine Canadian championships in the hammer and discus throws. In 1950, he won the bronze medal for the discus throw at the British Empire Games in Auckland, New Zealand. In 1982, he was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
In 1974, Svein Sigfusson was invested as a Companion to the Order of Canada.
