"Antique", "Vintage" or "Retro".  How to know the difference!

What is Antique?

The definition of an antique is "a relic or object of ancient times".  Most authorities of antiques consider an antique to be an object that is at least 100 years old.  A truly valuable antique would have provenance which is a record of ownership of the object, used as a guide to authenticity or quality.  The condition of the object and, if determined to be rare,  also increases the value. 

What is Vintage?

Vintage pieces are usually considered to be over 20 years of age but less than 100 years.  One definition of vintage is "a period of origin or manufacture". For example, if a determination has been made as to when an object was manufactured and that date was in the 1960's then it would be  described as vintage 1960's.  

What is Retro?

Retro typically means - Made within the last 20 years. Retro items are usually a reproduction of an item or style from the past.  Because retro items are usually cheaper than antique or vintage, you can create a style you like without breaking the bank.

The image above shows a cast iron Coca Cola butler/waiter.  Some research has stated that this butler is from 1898 but there is no provenance.  How would you describe this rare find?
