2003 news item (CBC): "Bill McNeil, a CBC radio personality who helped chronicle the lives of Canada's pioneers, has died. He was 78. In 42 years at the CBC, McNeil worked as a reporter, on current affairs shows and as a host. He is best remembered as the voice of the weekend morning show Fresh Air, and Voice of the Pioneer. Those interviews with Canadians who remembered the early days of homesteading, gold rushes and world wars became the basis for some of McNeil's six books." This is one of those books - possibly the best.
