On the reverse of each coin, the image by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant is based on the 18th-century playing cards that were used as currency in New France; it features a colour-over-engraved depiction of a King from one of the four suits.
The obverse features a repeating pattern of the suit symbols and the effigy of Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
